Nintendo's new video game bets on high technology and aims to surpass common games. Named the Wii U – a combination of the name of its predecessor and a play on the English word “you” (you) –, the new console has a control similar to a tablet computer, with a touchscreen, speakers and camera.
The device, which hits stores only in 2012, has already received criticism during its launch. For the company, the console presentation was not well executed. Even with a weak reception, it's worth knowing, understanding how the launch works and what it offers, since, according to Reggie Fils-Aime, president and COO of Nintendo's North American division, "The Wii U is a new structure for home entertainment”.
The new product is the key to Nintendo's future. Although the original Wii sold 86.7 million units worldwide – compared to Xbox's 54 million and PlayStation 3's 50.6 million – the new game didn't bring positive results after its release. The company's shares dropped about 11% after its presentation.
differences
Although the Wii U controller looks like a mobile console, the video game was not designed to be portable, and the images displayed by the new device are generated only for the Wii U. “Nintendo needed to differentiate itself from its competitors, which are a long way from catch up on company news,” says Chris Kohler, Games Editor at Wired.com.
Among the games in the game, the new New Super Mario Bros stands out with the option of playing for television or directly on the control screen. Shield Pose, a pirate game whose objective is to protect itself from enemy arrows, and Lego City Stories, a game set in the world of Lego, are also worth mentioning.
